Drinking Window: Size: 750mL Critic Scores: 100 AGC Region: Napa Valley ABV: "This is the darker expression of WRAITH, and I tend to prefer it in 2022. The wine is profoundly soulful and deeply penetrating. It’s boldly rich red and black fruits, warming spices, and sinewy tannins unfold in mesmerizing precision, flooding the palate with the most succulent, umami, and lush textures. The WRAITH Holy Quest is a barrel selection that embodies Jayson Woodbridge’s personal journey to fuse his life with wine as ‘a bodyguard, a protector—like body armour—shielding you from the buffeting forces of life.’ During my tasting with him in 2024, he offered this detailed explanation of Holy Quest: ‘[This is] a small, rare portion of WRAITH, [which is a wine] based on the legend of the Knights Templar. On Friday the 13th, the Templars were betrayed and extinguished by the corrupt French King and Pope. These knights, protectors of the realm, wore the Armour of Light. Still, as they prepared to create immortals, they forged the Armour of Night—allowing them to become vaporous at night, solid during the day, and safe only within the sanctity of Templar churches. The WRAITH label speaks to this secret, explaining how only two Templars can pass through the hidden seal—read the label closely." * (JC) Decanter - Tasted: January 2025

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Mount Veeder offers up fabulous spice notes, ranging from cinnamon and clove to anise and sage, all layered atop a dark-fruited base of black cherries and cassis. Full-bodied, concentrated and rich, yet silky smooth, this is tannic but ripe and polished, balanced and long on the finish. Cassis leads the way, accented by vanilla and streusel highlights, while the full-bodied palate is expansive, supple and creamy textured, then long and silky on the finish. In which case, the Monts Luisants will be filtered for security. Pure and clean colour, with a particularly complex bouquet, some lime blossom, some greengage, and some earthier notes. White fruit on the palate, with a crisp mineral thread, liverly at the finish, indeed a superb finish. I would keep it like this, so let's hope the Malo does not happen. In a vintage characterized by significant heat and drought, Tenuta San Guido has once again proven why this estate is in a league of its own. This is a triumph of terroir and timing, delivering a wine of aristocratic elegance and surprising freshness that defies the season. While many 2022's from Bolgheri are opulent and broad, Sassicaia remains steadfastly classic. The estate's decisions to harvest early to preserve acidity has paid off distinctively. The nose is deep and introspective, offering a sophisticated blend of creme de cassis, wild blackberry, and dark plum, lifted by signature notes of Mediterranean herbs, cedar, graphite, and a touch of fresh mint. It possesses a dense core of fruit, yet it feels weightless and energetic, driven by a vibrant spine of acidity. The tannins are incredibly fine-grained and polished, providing a seamless structure that guides the wine to an exceptionally long, savory finish." * Orazio Campoli - Tasted: Dec. 2025

While there’s certainly California luster and opulence in the margins, both are tucked away right now, overshadowed by lush pear, lime leaf and orange blossom. The minerality and tension on the palate are simply awesome and the acidity is bright and racy. Wines from these vintages tend to mature slightly more slowly than their warm-vintage cousins, so expect the parade of citrus, green apple and flinty minerals to dominate for the next few years. That said, the mouthfeel is just gorgeous with more gravitas and weight than expected at this time; a very pleasant surprise." "Chateau Montelena’s Napa Valley Chardonnay combines the best of the old world: structure, acidity and grace with modern ripeness and texture. It eschews heavy oak and butter and instead showcases the purity of vintage, vineyard and varietal character. Most notably, the 1973 vintage earned international acclaim when it was named the top Chardonnay at the 1976 “Judgment of Paris”, a historic moment that redefined the global perception of American wine and solidified Chateau Montelena’s legacy on the world stage." * Winery Notes

"We wanted to create a companion label to Scarecrow utilizing the younger blocks, or cuts of Clone 337 that were too abundant for the flagship bottling," explains winemaker Celia Welch. The 2022 vintage is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec, 5% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, all sourced from the J.J. Cohn estate in Rutherford, aged for 18 months in 60% new French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered. In 2023, the wine reads as quintessential Rutherford, opening with perfectly ripe boysenberry and cherry before building into classic site signatures of dusty minerality, unsweetened cocoa powder and a hint of bergamot. As Welch notes, there is also a subtle touch of sweet basil—a detail that captures Rutherford’s terroir beautifully, that dusty earth component edged with gentle sweetness. The palate unfolds with impressive density and richness, yet retains lift, carried by blue, black and red fruit and generous cocoa-powder tannins through the expressive finish. Utterly delicious and immediately drinkable, yet firmly structured to evolve gracefully. Farming in 2023 was overseen by Domenick Bianco, formerly of Joseph Phelps Vineyards." * Johnathan Cristaldi, Decanter - Tasted: March 2026
